”The growing fear of elitism and the attendant reluctance to differentiate has also had its impact in the arts. Symphony orchestras, for instance, are becoming uneasy about playing the classics and — according to a report of the American Symphony Orchestra League — of ’creating the image of an exclusive, arrogant, possibly racist institution’. The orchestras have been advised ’to become more representative of their communities’. These concerns have their origins in the scarcity of Hispanics and blacks among both musicians and audiences of symphony orchestras.”
